Two 15-year-old girls are facing multiple criminal charges, including sexual assault and forcible confinement, after a human trafficking investigation in Ottawa's southeast end.
Police say three female victims, ranging from 13 to 17-years-old, were taken to a residence in the 2400 Block of Walkley Rd. and subsequently driven to other locations for the purpose of prostitution.
The two girls accused are facing multiple charges including human trafficking, robbery, procuring, forcible confinement, sexual assault, assault, uttering threats, and abduction.
One of the girl's mothers told CTV Ottawa's Joanne Schnurr that she was surprised by the charges.
Ottawa police are also surprised by the circumstances of the case.
"When you think of human trafficking and the stereotypes that go with it, right or wrong, you don't think of three young offender girls," said S-Sgt. John McGetrick of the Ottawa Police Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Section.
"It's shocking."
Police are still looking for another suspect, a 17-year-old girl. They say the suspects connected through social media.
The charges come after Canada's Public Safety Minister Vic Toews announced a crackdown on human trafficking.
The names of the accused can't be released due to provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Ottawa Police Service Sexual Assault/Child Abuse Section at 613-236-1222 ext. 5944.
